Saxon Insular Scripts with Peter Lloyd

A wonderful workshop with Peter Lloyd who took us through the basic construction. We were encourage in the later stages to create a decorated capital and combine it with Versals or Lombardic lettering

Pointed insular minuscule was the chosen script. This was developed by Irish Scribes in the 6th century, this angular, compressed script was quickly adopted in mainland Britain and by the 9th century pointed insular minuscule was the most favoured Anglo-Saxon hand

The distinctive pointed aspect is created by twisting the pen to steepen the angle on the long descenders

Most would recognise the construction as being similar to Uncial with the possible exception of the letters "g" and "z", although there is no "z" in the examples those interested can discover it for themselves from the internet
